Selah Butterfield (@selahsketches) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Selah is a digital artist based in the USA, she paints a lot and the most beautiful thing (and inspiring for me, if you will, as I’m a self taught artist too) is to look at her quick and esponential growth in the last few years. On her profile she sometimes shares a few images as a comparison tool where you can see her art from three/four years ago paired with a nowadays project.
I can clearly see there was passion for illustrations, but at the same time I notice how beautiful her style has become and how much she improved. It makes me happy cause I see hope! Her latest artworks, especially the ones with complicated backgrounds, are so good and detailed I would change absolutely nothing even if I could.
The first image featuring Sophie and Howl from “Howl’s moving castle” (one of my favorites of all times) is simply gorgeous, there’s so much to look at and everything is so colorful and delicate. I like all the layers of depth she included from the blurry leaves in the foreground to the waterfalls and the rocks in the back, this piece develops in more than one axis. Super cool coloring technique too, love it!
If the first image was beautiful now look at the second one, think about all the things she drew and colored for a second, and then I don’t know.. let your mind explode? How is her’s still intact? She said this one took 128 hours from start to finish, I’m speechless. If you could split this artwork in 20 or 30 pieces I bet every single tile would still look like a masterpiece on its own. On IG you can see various steps and I have to say the coloring ones turn it from good to better to awesome to I can’t believe this.
What do you think about Selah? Do you also love what’s going on here?
I’d like to discuss today’s talent with you in the comments below!
