Michael Relth (@michaelrelth) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Michael Relth is an illustrator and animator based in the United States, he primarily works in digital and like other good artists have done he created his own set of brushes for Procreate to work with. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but somehow I never feel good enough on what I come up with… I’ve seen him use his set and I have to say it looks really interesting!
His main subjects are characters (sometimes it’s a portrait some other times it’s one or more characters painted in a larger scene) but you can also find landscapes, cityscapes, environments and more. Another thing about him is that I consider him “complete” in the sense that it seems like there is no style or subject that he has to avoid, his posts demonstrate he can paint whatever he wants in any way.
The first lady is one of his photo studies, he took a reference pic worked a bit with the colors and in a couple of hours (wow that’s impressive!) he came up with this. I love the dress there’s nothing else to say about it, it’s just amazing. I enjoyed swiping this post to see the details but more importantly the process video. Looking at a basic shape turn into a wonderful woman in a couple of seconds has no price.
The second pic does look like a fantasy themed storytelling with the knight there on the stairs. There’s a very nice game of lights hitting the entrance of this tunnel and little things like the white flowers following the path look so good. This post on IG has a video that goes over the creation step by step and it’s super instructive to see how the layers and the background-foreground contrast were achieved, it’s worth a visit!
What do you think about Michael? Do you also love what’s going on here?
