Julia Henze (@julia_henze) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Julia is an artist, illustrator and teacher living in the Netherlands. While her work is usually related to hand-drawn lettering for companies, packaging, t-shirts and so on she spends her free time to make wonderful urban sketches. Since I’ve come to know her because of this I decided to showcase the urban sketches over the lettering, but please go take a look at her website in the portfolio section if you are a lettering lover because she really kicks it!
Something to notice is the extensive use of markers as a meduim, I think she knows exactly how to pair them to create the perfect balance between brightness of color and pleasant composition.
The first image is a cool shop view, I’m surprised by how well she is able to draw and color glasses using markers. I specialized in watercolors and all I can say is that I really like the ability to mix things right on the paper and be able to soak up excess water or add tones to the painting. The fact that markers are harder to combine makes me appreciate illustrations like this one even more. And by the way I’m a flowers and plants lover too!
The second image is here to show that even if it’s challenging to complete a piece with a very limited color palette the result can be wonderful. If you think Julia likes to mix a lot of colors to create bright scenes this blue piece must have been an even harder test to pass, something she did quite well no doubts. I really like all the details on the facades.
