Jonathan Jay Lee (@jonathanjaylee) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Jonathan is a Taiwanese-American illustrator now based in Hong Kong. On his IG you’ll find many colorful illustrations often picturing everyday life moments in what could be “simple places” with “normal people”. This means there are always many figures involved in the scenes and it gives him the space to play with lines, colors and details to recreate stunningly realistic environments.
I feel every single bit of the canvas was well thought and had its own time for attention and this means if you try to put your focus on the second or third layer deep you will still find an accurate representation. Depth is in fact one of the words I’d use to describe his art, many times the point of view and the perspective are unique choices and produce awesome results.
The first pic he called “Reflections” and hit me for two main reasons: the first being the warm palette and the great use of shadows in the left side, the second being this awesome armor (plus the sword at the top!). Bonus points for the lights coming from the lantern, they’re even creating a word in the background. I like this illustration a lot!
The other two pieces are in fact some of those everyday scenes I was talking about, the first one is spectacular especially counting that sort of hologram warrior. I also love the flashing lights.. they’re so bright but that’s a very real effect in the middle of the night I think he nailed it. The last has one of the coolest perspectives I’ve seen in a while with the shop developing twisted a bit on the left. Both are immersive experiences.
What do you think about Jonathan? Do you also love what’s going on here?
