Emily Xu (@emilyamiao) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Emily is a storyboard artist and animation student, always looking for new characters and their stories to explore and share with the world. I want to talk about a “special” thing you can find on her website (the link is down below): there’s a full section for her stories in which you can use a slider and click the arrows to browse through a timeline of images building up to what’s very similar to an animated movie! You can read the lines of text written below the images and imagine it transformed into a video.
I had never seen this way of publishing short stories and find it super nice, she also always adds after that a few images to show off the characters in detail, her studies on them, the environment and other stuff, whatever she feels it would be cool to see. It’s great!
The first pic here has a funny background you can find on her IG post, but I want to focus on the painting itself cause I think she nailed all the colors and the lightnig effects. To see the butterflies so well in this “dark” room is fantastic, they’re always colorful and sometimes even bright through the glasses. The reflection on the ground is also pretty good, it’s a pleasure to be able to appreciate this artwork.
The second image is Emily’s own personal take on the little mermaid. The style and the palette she used here to create these “flaming” red reflections on a deep blue ocean are simply amazing. The face and the hair are gorgeous too and if you look at the water around the lady you’ll notice there was a huge amount of details and precision involved, using layering as a wonderful way to express her art.
What do you think about Emily? Do you also love what’s going on here?
