David DuBois (@davidldubois) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
David is a character artist with great skills both on pencil drawing and with the digital mediums. On his IG you’ll mainly find sketches and drawings made with procreate, sometimes they’re studies some other times finalized characters. I appreciate his style and I think the fantasy figures he posts are amazing and overall the perfect subject for him to show his abilities.
There’s room for anatomy but with strange poses, there are normal faces with creative expressions, or creative faces with normal expressions, there are tentacles and roots sprouting from the bodies and all these weird things end up creating a good environment in which David can let the mind (and the hand!) run free. As most of the artworks are in black and white he naturally developed a great sense for shadows and lights.. I’m sure you’ll like them.
The first image is a merchant design for a character that (judging from the hashtags) should belong to a d&d campaign. This exotic style and the large earrings really help defining the lady and, at least in my mind, also start telling a story about who she is and her personality. For example: from this drawing I’m already thinking she’s an extrovert person. Do you also see something more than what’s on paper?
The second pic of the sage is immediately making me think of a druid, there’s the staff and all the common traits are there like the long beard, the horns, a hood, an elderly look, he’s connected with nature.. This would be a great cover for an expansion pack in any game featuring this kind of characters, very cool design!
What do you think about David? Do you also love what’s going on here?
