Zac Retz (@zacretz) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Zac is an art director at Dramworks, based in California, USA. His style of painting is unique and beautiful, he shares studies and sketches and most of them are made with this big “through the glass” filter on (he does it it’s not actually a filter.. I know it’s kinda obvious but then I thought “if someone who reads this is gonna think I actually believe it’s a filter I’m gonna feel so bad” so I had to specify. Yeah sorry back to Zac). So the paintings really make your mind work cause you can’t get the details but at the same time you don’t even realize and you make them up naturally. It’s a good feeling they look like a memory I would say, where you remember something but not everything, the big players but not the details. Worlds where colors shapes and emotions matter the most.
The first image he did with this strong and warm palette is amazing, all the things in the foreground give me the impression of a busy market, the light in the back suggests it’s a hot day and I don’t know why but if I try to think about this as if it was in a movie and “animate” it in my mind for a second I can hear the crowd and a lot of background noise. And there has to be a strong food scent in the air. I like the chaotic environment he made me think of, even tho I realize that might not even be his purpose, I think it’s what his style does.. it lets me create starting from his art.
From chaos to tranquillity! The second image is such a great camp in the wilderness. The nature is beautiful and this one gives me the opposite feelings, if I try to “ear it” it’s all water and birds and.. roars? Yes that’s the Jurassic World’s camp sketch. But up until the dinosaurs’ roars it was all so good! And then who said dinosaurs have to be scary I think they’re cute.. some of them at least. It doesn’t matter this painting is beautiful and peaceful, it throws good vibes so I like it! I especially love all the waterfalls.
What do you think about Zac? Do you also love what’s going on here?
