Dave Malan (@davemalanart) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Dave is an artist and illustrator from Utah and on his IG profile he really likes to showcase a lot of wonderful drawings, moslty portraits, often uncolored. I find him very skilled with the pencil, it’s actually one of those moments I’m glad I can see the purity of the lines, cause he can achieve complex and beautiful shapes on human bodies (he doesn’t shy away from unconventional poses) just using pencil and a huge sense of depth and proportions.
I love how light reflections on a pencil drawing are never there for real, they’re just an emptyness of lines we’re used to auto complete in our mind. It’s gorgeous to see how much Dave knows about this and uses it to its full potential.
The first image is beautiful and shows both the things I just said and like a lot about his art, the hands are in a super strange position and it’s not easy to make them feel correct and precise like he did and the hair are shining through the absence of traits. It’s not a random hole in the piece, you can clearly see the light reflex is perfectly crafted. Love this one, even all the details on the face are amazing.
M.J. oil painting wonderfully represented here with exaggerated hands (at least that’s what Dave says in the caption, I’ve seen pics of the real Jordan’s hands and to be fair he didn’t even made them too big). Jokes aside I like a lot when he uses colors too, just to be clear, look at the awesome skin tones he obtained on the face, he feels alive I’ve got no words.
What do you think about Dave? Do you also love what’s going on here?
