Deborah Lee (@jdebbiel) is my pick for today’s talent!
If you don’t know what A Year on Talents is here you can find the description of the project: A Year on Talents Project
Deborah is Korean American illustrator and graphic novelist and her way of coloring artworks is just stunning to me. I’m not even going to say how cool the drawings are, but the colors oh my. The brightness I see in her pieces is beautiful, she can pick non conventional tones to complete an illustration and make it look so natural and so good that I’m starting to question myself… why can’t I see things this way in real life?
On her profile you’ll also find a lot of black and white pieces and she’s super good at using lights and shadows there to give depth, but this time around I couldn’t hold my passion for colors so I chose three wonderful illustrations where I think this skill of her will leave you speechless.
The first piece is an Adobe commission and I don’t even know where to start. Ok the palette is amazing as I said but here the geometries and the shapes play a big role. This one is setting your mind free especially if you look at the circle and the three boxes on the left (you might have to click the image to get the full version and see them, it’s worth it trust me!). The person standing out there is also a nice touch. Did I mention the different patterns she used to fill the big colored areas? I’m in love with this illustration!
The second image is yet another example of colors wisely used to set the focus and the mood. The fact that she’s pairing this deep blue with a whole palette of reds turning violet sometimes and orange other times is simply crazy good. The sea feels alive and bursting in movement. Beautiful.
What do you think about Deborah? Do you also love what’s going on here?
